Blood Donation Process Guide

A step-by-step guide to prepare, donate, and recover comfortably and safely.

  • Blood draw: About 10–15 minutes

Before Your Donation

Day before

  • Drink plenty of water

  • Eat iron‑rich foods

  • Get good sleep

  • Avoid alcohol

Day of

  • Eat a healthy meal 2–3 hours before

  • Drink 16 oz of water

  • Wear short sleeves or loose sleeves

  • Bring your ID and requisition form

Fasting requirements

  • Check your order email

  • Some tests require fasting

  • Water is always okay


At the Donation Center

Check‑in, about 10 minutes

  1. Present your ID and form

  2. Quick health questionnaire (ideally fill it out before you arrive)

  3. Mini‑physical, including blood pressure, temperature, and hemoglobin

Donation, about 10–15 minutes

  1. Sit in a comfortable chair or bed

  2. Your arm is cleaned and prepped

  3. Blood draw begins

  4. Relax during collection

Recovery, about 15 minutes

  1. Pressure applied to the site

  2. Rest and have a snack

  3. Drink juice or water

  4. Wait 15 minutes before leaving


After Donation

First few hours

  • Avoid strenuous activity

  • Keep the bandage on for 4–5 hours

  • Drink extra fluids

  • Eat regular meals

If you feel faint

  • Sit or lie down immediately

  • Elevate your feet

  • Drink fluids

  • Rest until feeling better

Rare side effects

  • Bruising at the site, normal

  • Soreness in the arm, normal

  • Dizziness, sit or lie down

Call your doctor if:

  • Excessive bleeding

  • Severe pain

  • Signs of infection


First‑Time Donors

It’s normal to feel:

  • Nervous

  • Uncertain about what to expect

  • Slight discomfort during needle insertion

Tips:

  • Tell staff it’s your first time

  • Ask questions

  • Look away during needle insertion

  • Focus on breathing

  • Bring a friend for support
